The 6-day course was the fulfillment of a vision to establish a training program in oral implantology in Montego Bay, with the pristine Jamaican white sand beaches providing the recreational backdrop. Drs. Leonard I. Linkow and Sheldon Winkler presented a series of lectures, and clinical treatment was performed under the supervision of Dr. Mike Shulman.
The conference began on January 16th with an induction ceremony where Drs. Leonard I. Linkow and Sheldon Winkler were conferred as Adjunct Professors and Dr. Mike Shulman was named an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Oral Health Sciences, University of Technology, Jamaica. The Hon. Errol Morrison, President of the University of Technology, Dr. Irving Fitzgodfrey McKenzie, Interim Dean of the School of Oral Health Sciences, and Dr. Winston E. Grey, Adjunct Associate Professor at the School of Oral Health Sciences, were named Honorary Fellows of the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics.
In attendance at the ceremony were the first year DMD students from the School of Oral Health Sciences. Participating in the hands-on course were clinicians from the United States, India, Thailand, Myanmar, and ten local Jamaican dentists. During the course the participants placed nineteen implants in twelve patients, five sinus lift procedures were performed, abutments and temporary restorations were placed, and restorative treatment continued for patients who had implant surgery performed during the previous two courses.
